Black History Month, observed annually, celebrates the achievements and contributions of African Americans and recognizes their pivotal role in shaping history. It is officially recognized in the U.S. and Canada in February, and in October in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the U.K.
The observance began as Negro History Week in 1926, created by historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. It was timed to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. By the late 1960s, it evolved into Black History Month, gaining momentum during the civil rights movement. In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially proclaimed February as Black History Month, urging Americans to honor the accomplishments of Black Americans throughout history.
At Franke Tobey Jones, we honor Black History Month with engaging programs and activities across our campus and Senior Centers. Senior University will feature topics like the Harlem Renaissance, African American artists, the Buffalo Soldiers, and soul food traditions. Performances and movies will highlight key figures such as Duke Ellington and other prominent individuals in Black history. Be sure to check our Senior University and Senior Center calendars for more details.
As we reflect on Black history, we also recognize the ongoing challenges in the pursuit of equality and justice. It is an opportunity to celebrate progress, foster dialogue about race, and commit to building a brighter, more inclusive future.

“Be a bush if you can't be a tree. If you can't be a highway, just be a trail. If you can't be a sun, be a star. For it isn't by size that you win or fail. Be the best of whatever you are.” – Barratt Junior High School Speech (1967)
