"My dad, who has been a resident in memory care at Franke Tobey Jones for the past couple years, has just passed away. That's prompted me to write a note I've been meaning to write for more than six months.
Last winter, at the Christmas party for memory care residents, I was struck by the kindness and care of the staff. The party happened over shift change and as staff was arriving or departing, they circulated among the tables, checking in on residents and families. It was the little things that struck me. The pat the on the shoulder. The crouching down to be at eye level while they spoke. The hand on the elbow. Those small kindnesses nearly brought me to tears, because they represented the patience and care that I knew my dad experienced every day.
Moving a family member into memory care is an agonizing decision. It was made so much easier because I could see that the staff actually cared about my dad and his quality of life. When my mom was ill earlier this year, and we weren't able to visit my dad regularly, I could rest easy knowing that he was in good hands. When family was in town and visited, they inevitably commented on the kindness and care they saw him receive.
So I'll close my note with one part thanks, and one part praise.
Thanks to Franke Tobey Jones for having and maintaining such an amazing memory care facility and team. It's a truly special place, and I consider myself truly fortunate to have found it for my dad.
And praise for the team... Vivienne has been wonderful to work with; I couldn't have asked for more support as we navigated things with my dad. And the team around her - nurses, aides, activities, social workers... even the cooks and custodial staff - have been kind and caring and thorough and thoughtful and patient and generally lovely. (I've avoided listing names only because I know I would inevitably miss someone in my current mental state.)
The last couple years have been tough... but have been better because my dad was in their care."
Thanks,
Jim C.
