Language, Identity, and Society
This series of lectures introduces the field of sociolinguistics by examining the intersections of language, identity, and society in both a US and international context. Language is influenced by and conveys information about one’s gender, race/ethnicity, class, and geographic location, among other social identities. Participants will learn about key topics in sociolinguistics with a focus on language and privilege as well as societal attitudes towards language and language change.

Discover Drums! Learning Percussion and Drum Circle
Join us to experience what music making can be like as part of a real drum circle! No prior experience is needed, and all instruments and materials are provided by the Tacoma Youth Symphony Association. Through these classes, you’ll learn the basics of playing percussion instruments, try out instruments such as a djembe, frame drum, talking drum, and more! Grow your drum skills in this fun and engaging environment.

In the Footsteps of The Red Violin
Besides the human voice, the violin and its cousins may be the most ubiquitous musical instrument on earth. It’s the instrument of both kings and paupers from the time of the Italian Renaissance to the present day. In these two lectures by Dr. Svend Rønning we’ll explore the classical music cannon and world music by sailing with the itinerant violin around the world.

We will discuss dimensionality, symmetry, and group theory in the mathematical underpinnings of artistry across centuries, cultures, and continents.

Senior University at Franke Tobey Jones provides a wealth of lifelong learning programs for people 55 or better, for both campus residents and seniors in the surrounding community. This educational and cultural program designed for seniors is unique to Pierce County. Senior University offers the opportunity to build skills, explore new subjects and enjoy the learning process with others.   Lecturers and instructors are experts in their fields hailing from local colleges and universities, businesses, not-for-profits and cultural organizations, along with others who have retired with rich career experiences. Most classes are offered free of charge as a public service to the Tacoma-Pierce County community.
