Language, Identity, and Society
This series of lectures introduces the field of sociolinguistics by examining the intersections of language, identity, and society in both a US and international context. Language is influenced by and conveys information about one’s gender, race/ethnicity, class, and geographic location, among other social identities. Participants will learn about key topics in sociolinguistics with a focus on language and privilege as well as societal attitudes towards language and language change.

Discover Drums! Learning Percussion and Drum Circle
Join us to experience what music making can be like as part of a real drum circle! No prior experience is needed, and all instruments and materials are provided by the Tacoma Youth Symphony Association. Through these classes, you’ll learn the basics of playing percussion instruments, try out instruments such as a djembe, frame drum, talking drum, and more! Grow your drum skills in this fun and engaging environment.

Get Reading Again with the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library*  
Did you know that there is a free state library service that provides audiobooks to any Washington resident who cannot read or use regular print materials as a result of temporary or permanent visual or physical limitation like glaucoma, macular degeneration, dementia, diabetes, stroke, Parkinson’s, or multiple sclerosis? Join Reilly Curran, Outreach Librarian, from the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library to learn more about this free library service and find out if you or your loved ones qualify. The presentation will include an overview of the service, the eligibility requirements, and the steps to utilize this service.

Book Reading & Signing of Deadly Yours, with Debut Mystery Writer Cyndi L. Stuart*  
Do you fancy yourself a super-sleuth? Are you always on the lookout for a good whodunit with plenty of twists and turns? Or have you always wanted to write a mystery novel? Then join Cyndi L. Stuart to hear a riveting excerpt from her just-released mystery novel, Deadly Yours , and her humorous tale about the perils and pitfalls of becoming a published author. The road to murder is never easy.   

Cyndi will be signing copies of her book after the reading and be available for any questions.

Senior University at Franke Tobey Jones provides a wealth of lifelong learning programs for people 55 or better, for both campus residents and seniors in the surrounding community. This educational and cultural program designed for seniors is unique to Pierce County. Senior University offers the opportunity to build skills, explore new subjects and enjoy the learning process with others.   Lecturers and instructors are experts in their fields hailing from local colleges and universities, businesses, not-for-profits and cultural organizations, along with others who have retired with rich career experiences. Most classes are offered free of charge as a public service to the Tacoma-Pierce County community.
