News Media in the United States: Past, Present and Future - Misinformation, Disinformation and Fake News: Threats and Fears in Today’s New Industry
The last presidential election didn’t create the problems of misinformation, disinformation and fake news, but it certainly exacerbated preexisting concerns and introduced a host of new fears. And these concerns and fears are not without merit. Several studies have indicated the negative impacts of false news and misinformation on everything from voting to the economy to climate change. This session considers these impacts and raises questions concerning the possibilities of legitimate news sources circumventing those damaging untruths.

Frances Martha (Franke) Tobey Jones is most often remembered as the generous wealthy woman who founded what became a beloved senior living community in Tacoma. But Franke’s life was not all prosperity and ease. Karen Haas portrays this vibrant woman as she reminisces about New York, Wisconsin, Tacoma and how she spent her life Building a Destiny.

Senior University at Franke Tobey Jones provides a wealth of lifelong learning programs for people 55 or better, for both campus residents and seniors in the surrounding community. This educational and cultural program designed for seniors is unique to Pierce County. Senior University offers the opportunity to build skills, explore new subjects and enjoy the learning process with others.   Lecturers and instructors are experts in their fields hailing from local colleges and universities, businesses, not-for-profits and cultural organizations, along with others who have retired with rich career experiences. Most classes are offered free of charge as a public service to the Tacoma-Pierce County community.
