How to Listen to Jazz Series
Learn about the history and importance of Jazz music through the ages with guided listening and discussion-based classes. We will cover, Early/Traditional Jazz, Big Band Jazz, Bebop, Hard Bop, Cool Jazz, Fusion, Modern Jazz and beyond. There are no prerequisites for this course—just bring an open mind and open ears! Speaker Bio:
Christophe Chagnard received his musical training in composition and conducting from Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory. From 1992 to 1994, Chagnard served on the faculty of the Berklee College of Music and in 1993; he became the first Music Director of the New England String Ensemble in Boston. He also served as Director of Orchestras at the University of Puget Sound from 2001 to 2012. From 2015 to 2018, Chagnard served as Director of Outreach at Classical KING FM 98.1. He co-founded the Northwest Sinfonietta in 1991 and lead it to prominence until 2015. Chagnard also served as Music Director of the Lake Union Civic Orchestra for 20 years and forged it as one of the finest community orchestras in the Northwest. In 2015, Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland proclaimed February 21st as “Christophe Chagnard Appreciation Day for his many contributions to this region” and Puyallup Mayor John Knutsen proclaimed February 22nd as “Christophe Chagnard Day in recognition of his incredible cultural contribution to the community over the past 24 years.” Most recently, the “Christophe Chagnard Scholarship” was established at the Tacoma Community Foundation to inspire young students to excel in music. Deepening his commitment to environmental sustainability, he founded Earth Creative, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the creations of artists who use nature as their medium in order to raise awareness about our increasingly threatened environment and the causes and effects of climate change.
Sisters in Time – Living History Performance by Karen Haas
The summer of 1855 was a time of change in the Puget Sound as more and more people of diverse ethnic groups settled the land. Karen Haas brings these times to life with "Sisters in Time." Wearing a work dress of the era, Karen portrays four very different women of that summer as she sings their songs and tells their stories. Wednesday, June 29, 2:00 pm, MJ Wicks Wellness Center. Performer Bio:
Karen Haas is a former Teacher and Museum Curator of Education. She is also one of the founders and organizers of the annual Tacoma Living History Cemetery Tour. Her living history presentations have been featured at National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, Fort Clatsop, and the Whitman Mission National Historic Site. She feels especially rewarded telling the tales of those whose voices are usually silent in history -- women.

Senior University
Senior University at Franke Tobey Jones provides a wealth of lifelong learning programs for people 55 or better, for both campus residents and seniors in the surrounding community. This educational and cultural program designed for seniors is unique to Pierce County. Senior University offers the opportunity to build skills, explore new subjects and enjoy the learning process with others. Lecturers and instructors are experts in their fields hailing from local colleges and universities, businesses, not-for-profits and cultural organizations, along with others who have retired with rich career experiences. Most classes are offered free of charge as a public service to the Tacoma-Pierce County community.
