Scammers are increasingly targeting seniors by impersonating airline customer service representatives—often through fake phone numbers found in Google search results or social media ads. These schemes exploit trust and create a false sense of urgency during stressful travel situations.
How the Scam Works:
Seniors searching for airline help may unknowingly call fraudulent numbers listed through “malvertising”—ads that appear above real search results. Scammers posing as airline agents request personal or financial information, claiming it’s needed for flight changes, cancellations, or refunds.
Red Flags to watch for:
- Unfamiliar contact details: Always double-check numbers on the airline’s official site.
- Urgent requests for information: Legitimate agents won’t ask for passwords or credit card info unsolicited.
- Fake social media messages: Be wary of DMs(direct messages) from unverified airline accounts.
How to Protect Yourself:
- Verify before calling: Use contact info only from official airline websites or apps.
- Avoid sponsored ads: Don’t click on paid listings in search engines.
- Report scams: File complaints at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and notify the airline.
